Why can't I get BBC, itv, 4... in the USA?

I live in the usa, but many of my favorite shows have always been british: the original office, extras, big brother uk, gavin and stacey, i'm a celebrity, etc. I know many of these shows now play on BBC America or HBO, but why are the actual british channels not available on satellite tv in the USA? It seems, just like in any other free market, that if something is in demand there most certainly should be a supply (even if it's for exorbitantly high prices). Also, don't tell me to just download the shows. I want to be able to just flip on the tv and watch them live. I notice when i'm in the uk that i can get american channels on satallite, so why not vica versa?
